Franchet Groundcherry, a herbaceous plant of Solanaceae Physalis, was always used as amedicinal plant and never regarded as a ornamental plant from time immemorial. The furit ofFranchet Groundcherry turn deep red in autumn. As a good ornamental fruit plant, it may havetremendous development potential in garden application. This paper based on the studies of droughtresistance, shade tolerance and garden application of Franchet Groundcherry provided a theoreticalbasis for the its application to landscape design. The main results are as following:⑴、We had a general idea of the situation of Franchet Groundcherry such as the habitat throughthe investigation to wild plants in Taiping Country of Anhui Province. Based on no damage to thewild plant resource,we transplanted plants of Franchet Groundcherry and the survival rate reached90%.⑵、Drought resistance. Drought resistance and its menchanism of Franchet Groundcherry werepreliminary analyzed with the changes of a series of characteristic index such as morphology, electricalconductivity and protective enzyme content under different degree water stress. After20-day waterstress, half plant were dead. According to the water-holding, water stress had apparent effect on thewater-holding. After10days’ water stress, the descenting speed of soil relative water content sloweddown apparently; relative electrical conductivity picked up speed; the values of Chlorophyll a,Chlorophyll b, Chlorophyll a+b, Chlorophyll a/b began to fall; the activity of SOD changes from up todown; the increasing speed of MDA went fast; the soluble protein contents decreased gradually. All ofthese indicators showed that franchet groundcherry did not grow in10days’ water stress. According tothe research, franchet groundcherry had a certain ability of drought resistance in the maximum limit of10days’ water stress or10%soil water content.⑶、Shade tolerance. Under shade conditions, leaf length and width of franchet groundcherryincreased more apparently than these in control group. After90days’ shade treatment, Chlorophyllwas the most in75%shade and more in shade than in control group. Curve of diurnal variation of netphotosynthesis indicated an evidently phenomenon “lunch break” in shade plants. Under the shadingcondition, net photosynthetic rate was higher than the control and the highest in75%shade. Under thechlorophyll fluorescence determination, Fo and NPQ were the lowest, Fm, Fv, Fv/Fo, Fv/Fv and qPwere the highest. There were more Fo and NPQ but less Fm, Fv, Fv/Fo, Fv/Fm, qP in the controlthan the shading conditions. After90days’ shade treatment, vitality of POD and soluble proteincontent was the most in75%shade and more in shade than the control. MDA in75%shade was thelast but one and the second in the control. According to this research, franchet groundcherry grewbetter in shading conditions and the best shade is75%shading, showing the strong shade tolerance. Inlandscaping design, franchet groundcherry could grew in insufficient illumination environment.⑷、Garden application.. According to the water plus light stress research and from thephenology and ornamental characteristics, franchet groundcherry could be applied to garden greenland in different environments such as flower borders, with flower ribbons, forest the edge and bottom of forest, waterfront and so on.
