The development of large-scale container ships and the market competition between container terminals put forward higher requirements on the operational capacity of the container terminals. More and more port managers focus on improving the operational efficiency of ports. Optimization of container terminal operation system has also become one of the hotspots in recent years. Berth assignment is an important part of container terminals. Improving the efficiency of the berth assignment system has important significance to improve the ships’operation efficiency and reduce the turnover time. It can also raise the market competitiveness of the ports. Most of previous research aimed at building models and optimization about berth assignment system. This article mainly study on improving the efficiency of continuous berth system through the simulation and analysis. In order to compare different berth allocation strategies and different ways of crane assignment, in this paper, we first establish an evaluation index system which includes berth operation efficiency, vessel operation efficiency and quay crane operation efficiency. We then design the Monte Carlo method to simulate different scenarios of operation modes and define various performance index values. The data are analyzed by variance analysis and sensitivity analysis. The sensitivity analysis can be divided into two cases, when the interval time of arrival vessels is changing and when the arrival probability of different types of vessels is changing. The results show that in different operation modes, the index values are different. We should choose proper berth allocation strategies and assignment of cranes according to the specific situations. Considering comparative analysis for continuous and discrete berth operation systems, it is necessary for the study of continuous berth operation system.
