In this paper, the concept of trenchless construction technology of underground pipelines is introduced, and the current research situation and developing trend about drilling rod mechanics are reviewed. As the guide drill rod is subjected to the most complicated stress and the harshest working condition among all components in drill system, it is taken as the research object to analyze its stress status.Based on the relative mechanics theories, the basic methods to analyze the various stress in dill rod are elaborated. The overall stress and general section stress of the drill rod are analyzed by using the ANSYS finite element method analysis software. The position of the most Mises stress distribution is found, and the influences of drill rod curvature radius on maximum stress, and those of torque on drill rod stress are obtained. Besides, the stress distribution regulations in general section is obtained.In addition, the rod joint is the most susceptible to damage and stress concentration during the oriented drilling construction, so the stress and deformation analysis on drill rod with different rod joint diameters and the structural buckling analysis are performed by using ANSYS software. The influence of rod joint diameter on equivalent bending stress and vertical deformation, and critical buckling load are obtained. The relative research results can provide the reference for selecting drill rod joint in engineering.
