The proportion of building energy consumption in China’s energy consumption is increasing now, building energy conservation is an urgent need. In China, most of the existing buildings are not energy-efficient, and the energy efficiency standards can’t be achieved even by huge of the new buildings, therefore, the great potential is existed in the building energy-saving. The energy consumption of buildings in North China has its own characteristics, and energy saving modifications should be based on these characteristics.Firstly, the energy consumption data of residential and public buildings in a city of North China is used to analyze the status of the urban energy consumption. The energy saving potential of urban residential buildings can be calculated. Secondly, to understand the energy-efficient status of public buildings further, in this paper, a six-storey office building of the city is taken as a model, and the energy simulation software EnergyPlus is used to simulate the loads of the office building. On this basis, four energy saving modification programs are proposed, and by comparing the simulated results, some factors affected building energy consumption can be found. Thirdly, based on the above main factors, it can be found that the thermal insulation performance of external walls and external windows have greater impact on the energy consumption through the simulation of the thermal insulation performance of building envelope. After that, for the fan-coil system which is used widely now, some kinds of modification method are put forward:improve the indoor design temperature, improve the supply temperature of chilled water, use the temperature difference at night for cool storage and use variable flow chiller. The simulation results show that the energy saving effects of changing indoor design temperature and using variable flow chiller can be more obvious. Finally, based on the above energy saving factors, the potential of urban public buildings can be analyzed.The paper based on the characteristics of buildings in a city of North China, analyze modification methods and the energy saving potential of public buildings. A reference for the energy saving modifications of public buildings is provided.
