In the evolution process of power grid, the locations of substations and power plants newly accessed to the grid have a direct influence on the topology structures and network performances. This paper introduces the related principles of substation localization in power system planning, and selects network growing point in the evolution of power network via new approach of the combination of the gravity method and the random location approach. It investigates the statistics properties of the network and concludes the influence of new approach on cascading failure of power system.First of all, it outlines the background and significance of the research. It summarizes the analysis methods of cascading failure of power system, and briefly introduces several kinds of common cascading failure models. It briefly discusses the basic theory of complex networks. Then during the grid evolution process, it selects network growing point by the combination of gravity method and the random location approach. Based on this, a local-world evolving network model is established and the theoretical analysis and simulation experiments of the model are presented. Through the analysis of node degree distribution curve and the weight distribution curve, it is showed that the new model can get the degree distribution of power law and node weight distribution of power law tail. The simulation results prove the validity of theoretical analysis.Based on the OPA model, gravity method is integrated into the selection of the location of new substation in order to build a new local-world evolving OPA network model. It adopts the approach of DC power flow for simulation of the new model with MATLAB. The simulation results show that the occurrence of large-scale cascading failures declines, which indicates that the network structure has become more reasonable and cascading failures have been restrained to some degree when gravity method is employed in the evolution of network.
