As the most stirring architectural decoration style, Art Deco has been coming into lives of the present age gradually after its reviver since1960s and1970s. During the age of shoddily copying and imitating Art Deco, the Jinmao Tower, being given the Chinese traditional culture profoundly, rises straight from the ground in The Bund of Shanghai. Her architectural mass, material selection and delicate skittle shed a new light to the architectural industry. Whether or not does Art Deco style move to a new stage? What characteristic should this stage present and what direction of development should this stage follow? This paper discusses the tradition and modern Art Deco style in the aspects of decoration and symbol.This paper consists of four parts:the second chapter gives a historical review of Art Deco in20th century both temporally and spatially; from Chapter3to Chapter5we discuss Art Deco in the aspects of decoration and symbol, Chapter3presents the features of traditional Art Deco, and explain the reason why it still wins a place in architectural field, and Chapter4gives a contrastive analysis on differences and common grounds between traditional and modern Art Deco, while Chapter5summarizes the features or should-have features of Art Deco, and analyzes the reasons that bring out those features in social and technical aspects.This paper argues that the new form of modern Art Deco should contains delicate decoration and its expressing symbol. Its decoration style has changed from additional decoration that widely used in traditional Art Deco to structural and skittle decoration. Its symbol should be doubly symbolic in historical cultural background and traditional Art Deco style in20th century. By analyzing the social and technical reasons that promote the development of Art Deco, we argue that Art Deco should step over the tradition and derive the essence directly from historical culture, and we hope to provide new ideas on the innovation of forms of Art Deco.
