Gear transmission is of the following characteristics, large carrying capacity, highprecision of transmission and constant power transmission etc., so it has been widely usedin the modern large-scale machinery and equipment. But because of the complicatedstructure of gear transmission, and poor working conditions, and other factors, makes itbecome a easy to the failure of the parts. Once the gear failure will affect the entireoperation of equipment, and even lead to the major security incidents. So the developmentof the gear fault diagnosis technology has a very important significance. It is a bottleneck problem which is hard to collect the fault characteristics from strongbackground noise in the fault diagnosis of the gear with traditional vibration method.Acoustic emission signal (AE) has a collection of high precision, found fault earlier,anti-interference ability etc., it is introduced into the gear failure, can greatly increase theefficiency of fault diagnosis. This paper introduces the gear transmission mechanism, Gear common type of fault,The cause of the fault to generate and The main characteristics of the manifestations.Through understanding about the cause of the acoustic emission signal generated, transmission characteristics, signal attenuation of the basic characteristics of acousticemission signals can be found the acoustic emission signal of gear fault is non-linear,non-stationary signals. The traditional methods of the signal analysis can not preciselydescribe the frequency of the signal changes over time. But Hilbert-Huang transformalgorithm based on signal as a variable, so better to solve the problem. Therefore with theHilbert-Huang transform to deal with the acoustic emission signal of the gear fault. Beforethe analysis of the actual fault signal, using it to analyze the simulation signal and thedesired effect is achieved. In the experimental phase, the fault signal of the gear under different rotating speedand load was captured using the vibration equipment and acoustic emission equipmentrespectively. Then, the two types signal was analyzed and processed through the Hilbert-Huang transform. by comparison the empirical mode decomposition diagram, hilbert spectrum and marginal spectrum of the acoustic emission signal and vibrationsignal, it obviously shows that the acoustic emission signal is more applicable for the fieldof gear fault detection.
