The city of Barcelona, started its urban renaissance in1980s, including the micro-level revival of form and technology and macro-level exploration and innovation of urban planning theory. With wealth of practice, Barcelona provides rich templates and experience for the contemporary worldwide urban rehabilitation and upgrading. In the city, there co-exist the medieval streets, the urban structure with the land system in19th century, city blocks designed by Cerda, modern outskirts of the city, and the modern large-scale urban context. In the progress of urban renaissance, Barcelona took multi-faceted investments in the construction of public space actively, especially the building of thousands of small urban public spaces which are distributed everywhere. The existence of these spaces, makes ancient Barcelona vibrant, and attracts the world’s attention. The paper mainly does study on small urban public spaces within five districts with different historical background and urban forms. The study was taken from two aspects mainly, which are urban spatial patterns and composition, space use and quality of the small public spaces. Through spot observation and thinking, the paper attempts to reveal the formation law of small urban public space and conveys the concepts of people-oriented " non-design" and "homogenization". Furthermore, the paper supplies a reference value on Chinese urban planning and construction, such as the continuation of the historical context of the city, the revival of the old town, the optimization of residential environment and construction of urban public spaces in the new town.
