The Automobile is growing much more important role in our life as the GDP risesup quickly. While the vehicles possessing capacity grows up, the varied trafficaccidents related with automobiles are going up too. That bothbring great property lossand threaten the common people’s safe. Therein, the front collision and side impactcollision are the most frequently in the different traffic accidents, the side impactcollision is the most harmful to the driver and passengers. Therefor, it has been gotmuch attention from every large Automobile Manufactures and different researchinstitutes of automobile in the global world and become one important research field ofpassive safety in the automobile.In the research of the automotive side impact, doors and B pillar, which is animportant indicator to evaluate while the side crashworthiness of a car is good or bad,are the important thing for this research. Doors and B pillar mainly test the change ofthe displacement and velocity of the components by the external force, because thesetwo indicators directly related to the safety of passengers. To effectively reducepassengers injuries suffered in a side impact, the collision force must be delivered tovarious parts of the body evenly, so as to minimize the displacement and velocity whena car get attacked.This paper aims to use different methods to optimize and amelioratecrashworthiness of the side of the car’s structure and to verify the effectiveness of theseoptimization methods in theory.This paper summarizes the research background and the significance of the safetyof the automotive side impact, research status at home and abroad and the contents andmethods of the research. It also introduces the basic theory of the crash simulation andthe optimal design theory of the resistance of side impact. I have established a finiteelement model of the vehicle side impact by means of the CAD model of the foreignproduction car and tested its validity according to requirements, and then got thesimulation result by setting boundaries and constraints which is combined with theexplicit finite element analysis software LS-DYNA and the requirements ofGB20071-2006, applying the central difference method and calculating of the sideimpact of the model. The result shows the deformation speed and the invasion of Bpillar which is an important component of the side wall is normal. It could cause serious injury to passengers if the deformation speed and the invasion is excessive, sothe thesis improves the side crashworthiness of the original vehicle by increasing thethickness of the sheet, using ultra-high strength steel, adding structure strengtheningparts, using different collision beam cross-section shape and optimizing the position ofthe collision beam. The simulation results show that different methods can have thegood effect of crashworthiness of the automotive side impact, but the most effectiveway, for the mature body structure, is adding strengthening parts reasonably. Theoptimization method, the conclusion and the methods to improve side impactperformance of this paper make a contribution to the study of crashworthiness of theautomotive side impact.
