Exploitation of mining resources to the community to bring a wealth of raw materials as well as certain pitfalls and hazards to society, one of them is the tailings pond. Tailings dam break accident in recent years occurs sometimes, with enormous destructive and irreparable loss of life and property. Therefore, study on the tailings dam failure modes and dam break sand stream migration law and the tailings downstream range predicted dam break, have engineering significance of study on the tailings dam design and construction management.Begin from the method of Fault Tree Analysis, Analysis derived tailings dam downstream slope instability and fill dam overtopping, are the main reasons to cause the tailings dam failure; Use of the seep and slope modules of the GEO-studio software, for50m dam height stacking dam, analysis of the dam seepage line and the variation of the stability in the case of flood level. When the flood level close to or over the dam height, dam will be instability and failure. Fluid dynamics software (FLUENT) to simulate the dam break sand flow of migration, the first by simulated indoor test model, validate the feasibility and correctness of the software simulation, then the slip arc and overtopping type two dam break sand flow migration analysis and simulation, explored in different dam failure height, different downstream channel slope the sand dam break when stream maximum impact, maximum stack depth, the impact of time and the impact of distance law; For a tailings dam accident, the model, to calculate the dam stability, and a dam break simulation and analysis of the flow of sand, the simulation results agree well with the measured data.
