The Study On The Traditional Settlements And Folk Houses In Liu’s Family Village In Shexian County

Dwellings architecture, which relates closely to people’s life, is the essence of the nation’s traditional architecture. In order to be accommodated to regional climate, customs, and construction techniques, dwellings evolve to different architectural patterns. Lay out plans, facade and indoor and outdoor decoration design, to name some, reflect diversified local attributes and internal culture.This paper studied Liu Jiazhai of She Xian which is located in Tai Hang Mountain, aiming to analyze and summarize the form, characteristic, and internal culture of the local dwellings. As a rare old mountain stronghold groups of buildings in the north part of the nation, Liu Jiazhai shows distinctive study value due to its intact preservation of the overall pattern and unique mountain fastnesses settlement form.The author did an in-depth research in Liu Jiazhai’s history background, planning and site selection, defensive function, and spatial organization through collected materials and spot work, so as to absorb the wisdom and intelligence from the traditional architecture and apply them to the modern architecture.This study specifically discuss the traditional settlement and its unit building design gimmick from the perspective of professional architecture by using both essays and accompanying pictures. For the part of Settlement constitute, the paper emphasized the analysis on siting, general layout, road network and landscape of settlement; for the part of single courtyard, the paper particularly studied the elemental form, inscape and typical courtyard space; for the details part, the paper elaborates both the decoration and specific structure traits. Throughing the existing traditional domestic architecture explored the implication of the regional history and internal culture. Finally, considering the current situation of dwellings in Liu Jiazhai, the author brought up some suggestions and practices in preservation and renovation of traditional dwelling. The author also stated her own viewpoints of sustainable development of traditional dwellings, in order to make it possible for the traditional dwellings to satisfy modern life.
