With the implementation of the western development strategy and focusing on thewestern region in the economic strategy, the highway construction has been rapidly developedin the western loess areas. A large number of high subgrade slopes will be encountered in thehighway construction of the loess areas. Due to complicated topographic and geological factorof high slopes, if the treatment is not proper, slope disasters could easily occur, resulting ingreat environmental damage and economic losses; therefore, the stability analysis and studyon protective measures of high slopes is one of the key technical problems in the currenthighway construction. According to the research in stabilization and protective measures ofhigh loess subgrade slopes, the following results have been obtained:(1) Based on the survey of many highway slopes which have been built, the basicfeatures of high loess subgrade slopes are summarized, and the loess land is verified into eighttypes of geological structure; the main deformation and destruction forms of high loesssubgrade slopes are archived, which are erosion, spalling, collapse, sliding, slumping, andwedge failure; this paper includes the factors of the slope destruction to natural factors andhuman factors.(2) Steps and criterions of the slope stabilization are analyzed and summarized, and thecommonly used methods in stability analysis of high loess subgrade slopes are derived anddiscussed, that concludes their features and applicability.(3) The protective measures of high loess subgrade slopes are analyzed and summarized, and are divided into engineering protection, plant protection and comprehensive protection ofthree; the frequently applied measures are studied, and the scope of application, advantagesand disadvantages of highway slopes are put forward; a brief description of drainage measuresis made.(4) This paper analyzes and evaluates the high loess subgrade slopes’ stability inRong-Wu Highway by using the series software of Lizheng Geological Structure Designingand ABAQUS, and designs the protective measures, and optimizes the subgrade slopes.
