Geometry and architecture have been in a close relationship since the birth ofarchitecture. Geometry plays key roles in the architecture design and constructionprocesses, such as form designs, scale controls, aesthetic rules, cultural sense,performances of structures and materials etc. Euclidean geometry in architecture hasdeveloped into a perfect level, from measurement geometry to humanities geometry,from mathematics and abstract geometry to neo-humanities geometry. However, withthe rapid development of complex science and computer technologies, a bottom-updesign strategy and mass customized fabrication mode subverted the previousarchitecture view, and a lot of complex building forms are emerging. The variousadvanced geometries after the Euclidean geometry, including algebraic geometry,differential geometry, fractal geometry, topology geometry and computation geometry,are used in the morphogenesis of architecture. Meanwhile, they provide reasonablestrategies for the analysis and optimizing on the construction processes of complexforms. The advanced geometry is on its way to complexity and materiality inaccompany with the practice of those pioneer architectsThe structure of this paper is stated below. Firstly, this paper did some relevanttheoretical research. On one hand, generalizing different new architectural design trendsinto several directions and proposing their geometrical requirement. On the other hand,combing the concepts of various newly developed geometries and proposing thepossible direction in architecture. Moreover, the emerging field of architecturalgeometry are reviewed, which aims at solving problems of analyzing and optimizing thefree-curved surface of complex building in the process of construction. Secondly,computer aided design tools and some advanced modeling technologies like parametricdesign and algorithm are studied, along with all kinds of digital fabrication technologies.The first part of the core content of this paper is the introduction of these advancedgeometry prototypes and some related cases which show how the prototypes are used inthe digital morphogenesis. The second part is about the research of architecturalgeometry. The study includes geometric modeling of different kinds of free-curvedsurface and the analyzing and optimizing strategies of constructions. What’s more,some practical problems like surface division, structural frame design and node processing, etc are studied too. Finally on the basis of some relevant domestic practicalcases, the article expounds the important roles which advanced geometry plays incomplex architectures.Nowadays, most architects are still confined in the classical geometry, thus a largeamount of advanced geometry knowledge in this paper will greatly expand thearchitect’s view and the ability to deal with complex problems in architecture design andconstruction.
