Based on the research on Chinese paintings and the theory of place, the paperstudies the Yongchuan Art Museum Project, discussing how to create a uniqueexperience of the place in art museums.Chinese paintings have distinct aesthetic characteristics and appreciation patterns. The adopted material media, the way of viewing the works, the conveyedunderstanding of time and space and the reproduced atmosphere of the paintings allrequire an integrated experience of the place in art museums. After studying the relations between architecture and environment and betweenexhibits and the exhibition place from the perspective of Chinese paintings, the paperproposes the principle of building the place for enjoying the paintings–creating aplace for “appreciation”.The Yongchuan Art Museum, mainly exhibiting Chinese paintings, is designed basedon the methods to create the flavor of Chinese paintings. After considering both natural(mountains and rivers) and urban landscapes, the museum is built into a shape of “山”(the Chinese character that means “mountain”) that integrates artificial and naturalelements. The outdoor space of the museum, with long corridors suspended in the air, winding rivers and inscriptions and paintings engraved on cliffs, is inviting in terms ofenjoying the mountains and rivers. And the indoor space, with an appropriate internalstructure that facilitates the flow of visitors, satisfies the demands for appreciating suchpaintings. In particular, bamboo formworks are adopted in designing the concreteprotection layer of the periphery of the buildings, which both forms the texture ofmountains and facilitates the drainage. Thus the rain is exploited in a romantic way.The whole design aims to create an integrated, concrete and dynamic atmosphereconsistent with the flavor of Chinese paintings.
