| The main purpose of the research is to use space syntax as a quantitativeanalyzing tool to calculate and compare the spatial configuration of traditional ChineseGarden and contemporary regional practices, thus finding the enlightenment forcontemporary regional reconstruction.In order to validate the applicability of expanding space syntax into the realm oftraditional Chinese Garden and contemporary regionalism practice, the article choosesYu Garden and Suzhou Museum as samples for comprehensive syntax calculation. Thethorough analysis indicates that space syntax is a universal tool in exploring the coreproperties of space, since almost all kinds of architecture and city forms could beabstracted into the basic elements needed for spatial configuration calculation. As aquantitative tool, space syntax can convert the subjective spatial feelings to objectivedata. Once we gain an accurate understanding of the composition of traditional spaceformation, we are able to find the feasible references for contemporary regionalreconstruction.Expanding into the realm of traditional Chinese Garden is a new appliance ofspace syntax. As for the realm of both traditional architecture and contemporaryregional practices, the comparison of their space syntax can bring new perspectives. Itcan convert the spatial formation to objective data, serving as a bridge that combinesdifferent types of architecture under one context. Therefore, space syntax can help usunderstand both traditional and modern space better, and figure out the methods toinherit the cultural image of space in practical ways instead of purely using subjectivedescriptions, making the past serve for the present. |
