| University outdoor space is the place in which outdoor activities take place and itplays an important role in developing students’ personality and communication ability.Recently, a lot of new campuses were built in the process of the university expansion. The similarities of the outdoor space in these campuses are significant, despite theessential differences of their geography, climates and environment. The design ofsome parts of the outdoor space in the campuses has not considered the factor of theclimates, which affects the outdoor activities greatly, so that the utilization is low. It isimportant to conduct research on the climate adaptability of the university outdoorspace. The existing research on the outdoor space works mainly on two aspects of‘climate-human’ and ‘climate-space’, but scarcely on the human behavior in theparticular climate condition. In other words, it seldom considers the result fromclimate to human activities, and lacks a research mode from the perception of‘climate-human-space’. This work follows the research order of result form climate tohuman, space use by human and climate adaptability of space, i.e. the order ofclimate-human-space-climate.This paper works on the design of the climate adaptability for university outdoorspace in a special climate, Hot-Humid climate. The design pattern of the outdoorspace under the Hot-Humid climate is shown based on the research on the characterof human behavior in the outdoor activities under the Hot-Humid climate. This paperinvestigates all the colleges in Xiamen area, classifies three kinds of outdoor space inthe campuses and studies outdoor activities of each category. Moreover, the climateof Xiamen area is analyzed based on the methodology of architecture climate designand the design strategies are made for the condition of the Hot-Humid climate. Finally, based on the previous work, this paper makes some suggestions for universityoutdoor space, which not only consider the relationships between the Hot-Humidclimate and the human behavior, but help to design the university outdoor space in thehumanization way to satisfy the faculty and students in the campuses. |
