Pile foundation is wildly used in engineering constructions at present. Theprestress high concrete pile (PHC), which has the advantages of high bearing capacityof single pile, a wide range of application, reliable quality of pilesinking and lowercost of construction, has been developing fast in recent years. In general, pile bearsvertical and horizontal loads simultaneously. However it is very late that people studythe horizontal bearing capacity of pile influenced by the history of pile foundationdevelopment. Nowadays, the means of horizontal static load test, analytical methodsand numerical simulation are used for researching the horizontal bearing capacity ofpile. Generally, the horizontal bearing capacity of pile is affected by many factors.While the role of vertical load is unconsidered in horizontal static load test; theinteraction of pile and soil, and geological conditions are simplified in analyticalmethods; PHC pile is usually considered as an elastic body, taking no account of theproperty that concrete has high compression strength and low tensile strength.Based on the above situations, the research achievements and progress on thesubject of horizontal bearing capacity of pile foundation at home and abroad aresummarized first in this paper. The full-scale field test and3-D finite element methodare employed to research the behavior of soil and pile with vertical and horizontalloads simultaneously, and the influence of vertical load on horizontal bearing capacityof single pile. Some conclusions have been obtained in the paper.Self-made equipment is used to apply vertical load in the field test, which refersto the horizontal static test of single pile. The horizontal force and displacement ofpileblock are monitored in the field test, and the horizontal bearing capacities ofsingle pile with different vertical loads are analyzed in the paper. In addition, thefinite element method is employed to simulate the field test, pile with concretesmeared cracking model, soil with Mohr-Coulomb model, and the prestressing forceis also taken into account. By compared with the field test, the simulated results arethought reliable. Conclusions could be made that vertical load can delay the concretecracking of pile body,increase the cracking moment and horizontal displacement of pileblock simultaneously. Moreover, the anti-bending test and horizontal static loadtest of pile with different ratio of reinforcement and precompression are alsosimulated in this paper. It is believed that the cracking moment and horizontal bearingcapacity of pile increase with the ratio of reinforcement and precompression.
