The most important condition for survival and development of human society is toensure energy supply. Nowadays, energy and environment issues in parallel are listed as theimportant challenges of human society, inflecting the progress and future of its evolution.Relieve energy crisis, develop renewable energy and realize energy sustainable developmentbecome significant move of world energy development strategy. Wind energy, importantcategory in renewable energy for large-scale commercial application at this stage, is rapidlydeveloping recently around the world. Especially, some European countries who are better inexploiting and utilizing windpower, esp., Denmark and Germany, have a plan that windgenerated electricity will take up20%of domestic gross electricity production in about2020.In China, there is a bright future for windpower to develop massively, because available windsource is at least10billion with domestic windpower installed capacity0.8%of total installedcapacity. As windpower is growing, some land problems, such as land occupation, noise,inconvinienent to inhabitants, are emerging gradually. Because wind condition of offshore isbetter than that of land, in addition, wind power generation technology and industrial scale isexpanding continuously, offshore wind power is getting more attention, becoming oneimportant part of wind power exploitation and utilization. There is a trend that Europe isbeginning to move WEC from land to offshore. Moreover, China has over18000km coastlineand more than5000islands with abundant wind power.2-15m offshore regional alongcoastline has available reserves about750million kw, triple of land wind energy, which isnear to our electricity utilization load center. So exploited offshore wind power, which issignificant move to realize sustainable development, benefits to realize the strategy target ofour energy developmentTo exploited wind power nicely, first step is to design a good offshore WEC. However,as the preliminary procedure of WEC design, a good drive train design directly lead to thesuccess of the whole design. The essay bases on analysis of current offshore WEC researchand windpower development direction, and follows the thought of two individual WECsselection. Then form the detailed analysis of three drive trains by experts’ grade. Last, basedon primary3D model and components selection, using the primary load calculation of Bladedsoftware, etc and quantitative load data, component mass and estimated price of components,to finally decide one appropriate drive train design for5MW WEC.
