With the quickening of the process of industrialization, urbanization and the chaos of the city expansion, the urban land, water resources and ecological environment is facing unprecedented huge pressure. Ecological environment problems are also manifestative and outstanding. The price paid in the environment and resources is worth our concern and valued in our country. All sorts of irrational practices exist in the construction of landscape architecture in our country, such as the wasting and overuse of natural resources such as water resources and constructional materials. Many landscape constructions are lack of macroscopic planning, building not according to the site’s own properties and the function requirement, there obviously exists over design in each stage of planning and design, there is a lot of eager for quick success and instant benefit extravagance and waste phenomena, which makes the natural environment and ecological resources that the city relying on are destroyed, deviated from the sustainable development and economizing in the city landscape construction in our country. Therefore, related save concept is emerging, the research and practice based on the concept of intensive landscape architecture theory is paid more and more attentions.Cemetery, is where burying the dead and providing a place for the living expressing miss and their memoriam, is a necessary part of the human’s spiritual culture life, is a special kind of urban green space which playing an important role in the space urban green space system. But in the modern background of the quickening urbanization, urban development and population expansion, the city is showing the huge demand of city cemeteries, but there exist unreasonable layout, wasting land, making the city landscape fragmented, insulating from the living, and can’t make the living and dead use together, and plant configuration that fastening on grave existing serious problems such as grave and losing rationality in many aspects such as the traditional design method of the cemetery planning and design. Therefore, the intensive landscape architecture concept should be paid more attentions, work in the planning and design of the modem city cemetery, make the modern city cemetery really become an important part of urban green space. This paper firstly study there aspects of the core content such as the intensive landscape architecture theory, the theoretical basis of the intensive landscape architecture, the study perspective of the intensive landscape architecture planning and design. Then, it analyzes the present situation and problems of the modern city cemetery, combines the intensive landscape architecture theory with the planning and design of modern cemetery, and discusses the content of the planning and design of the modern cemetery based on the theory of intensive landscape architecture. Lastly, it takes the planning and design of paradise cemetery in Wuhan for example, elaborating the planning and design method of the cemetery based on the theory of intensive landscape. The innovation of this paper is:(1) analysing the current situation of the city cemetery planning and design, and proposing the modern city cemetery, as a special kind of garden space, which being suit for the research of the intensive landscape architecture theory;(2) combining the intensive landscape architecture theory with the modern city cemetery planning and design, taking the modern city cemetery as a starting point, studying the intensive landscape architecture theory and methods;(3) taking the planning and design of Tiantang Cemetery actual project in Wuhan for practice carrier, studying the application and practice of the concept of intensive landscape architecture in modern city cemetery from concept planning to the development design.
