With development of new energy, more and more distributed generations are connected in distribution system. The traditional distribution system characterized by radical network become a multi-source one. The direction of power flow is no longer invariable and the traditional fault location method is no longer adaptive. This paper analyses the impedanced-based algorithm applied to distribution system with DG. A fault location technique based on Multi-Agent System is also proposed which can locate the fault without too much measments. Firstly, the fault-branch-region or fault-selected-section is determined based on the coordination between Agents. If there is fault-branch-region, the searching process is end. Otherwise, the the impedance-base algortithm is performed for the fault-selected-section to find the fault point. If the fault-selected-section is upstream of DG, the algorithm is excuted in the Master Station Agent using local measurements and DG-related measurements. If the fault-selected-section is downstream of DG, the algorithm is excuted in the Line Execution Agent using only local measurements. The presented method can locate both the fault-branch-region and the fault-section. It is applicable to the distribution system with plenty of branches and is outstanding in calculating speed. At the same time, the method doesn’t need plenty of information transmission. The fault-selected-section location method based on MAS is realized on the JADE platform. At the same time, a simulation model based on MATLAB is developed to vertify the algorithm and the results have demonstrated that the proposed algorithm is accurate enough even in the conditon of high fault resistance.
