Open, Pluralistic, Symbiotic-Hargreaves Landscape Design Interpretation

With the rapid development of economic over the past decade, the modernizationand urbanization continue to grow quickly. In such a situation, the landscape industryin China faces unprecedented opportunities and challenges. On the one hand,with theimprovement of economic level and cultural level, people’s needs and tastes of thelandscape have been greatly improved, and the landscape industry has broad marketprospects. On the other hand, due to the huge potential of domestic landscapemarket,many foreign designers and companies that have rich design experience,mature design ideas and cutting-edge design approaches are attracted deeply, and theyhave occupied a large part of the domestic market. in a short span of ten years.In view of this, domestic Landscape Architects should learn from these foreigndesigners or groups in order to provide a solid foundation for our country’s landscapedevelopment. But what kind of vision should we take to understand foreign landscapedesigner’s practice? In the current situation, how to learn from abroad and what canwe learn from them? What does foreign designers’ practice mean for China’slandscape design? With these questions, this article chooses a famous Americanlandscape architect-Hargreaves as an example, in order to understand his design ideaand design way on the basis of objective truth, and draw some valuable lessons amongthem to promote development of China’s landscape industry.Firstly, this article introduces the political, economic, art, and landscapedevelopment background from Hargreaves’s birth and Hargreaves’ s growth process,including his study experience, professional experience and main works. And thenthree different representative of landscape works are chosen to be analyzed, accordingto the size of the landscape works. After that, introduces some design trends related toHargreaves, analyzes how these design trends influence Hargreaves’ landscape designand his thought of the landscape. Finally,conclude the landscape design thought,methods and characteristics of Hargreaves, and try to evaluate his landscape designcombining with the whole landscape development context, and point out the meaningof Hargreaves landscape design for China’s landscape design practice.It is necessary to point out that there are many different views to Hargreaves’sdesign thoughts. This paper studies from the perspective of landscape development in order to avoid one-sidedness. Drawing a conclusion that Hargreaves landscape designthought is an open multiple symbiotic landscape stage, and I hope this view can givean comprehensive index to Hargreaves landscape practice, I also hope it can help us toform a correct value orientation in future’s study and design progress, in order tocreate a balanced ecological environment, recreation appropriate and sceniclandscape.
