Building energy conservation has been widely studied worldwide in recent years with the crisis of energy shortage. However, with the economic development and social improvement, there is an increasing number of comfort air-conditioning residential buildings, in which plenty of electricity is consumed by the air-conditioning system. Therefore, how to reduce the air-conditioning energy consumption while ensuring the indoor comfort has been an important topic. The author investigated and measured the resident building in Changsha, typical of the Summer Hot and Winter Cold climate. The relationship between the building air-conditioning system and the building envelope was investigated with simulation software. On the basis of a comprehensive understanding and partly experimental study of the relevant building materials, influence of thermal performance and structure of building envelope, such as wall, window and roof, and the ratio of window to wall on air-conditioning energy consumption was analyzed in this paper. Besides, the appropriate selection of the Building Shape coefficient was discussed. In order to research how to reduce energy consumption of building with passive building design methods, this paper applied the simulation software, to build a basic architecture model, and respectively got the energy consumption in winter, summer and the whole year. Based on this model, we selected four factors in passive building design methods, such as thermal insulation of exterior wall, the ratio of window to wall, the materials of window and the forms of roofing, to reform the basic model, and analyzed the influence of the four factors on building energy consumption. During the studying of the exterior window materials properties, we used Therm and Window software which discovered by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), to calculate the glass performance parameters. Meanwhile, we analyzed the Building Shape coefficient of the model with rectangular underside and discussed the relationship between residential building energy conservation and building shape coefficients. The factors influencing the architectural figure coefficient were also explored.By means of the economic analysis for various energy saving methods, the most economical thickness and measurement of exterior envelope insulation was suggested, the basic model was set as an example, and four design approaches were applied. The most economical method was obtained after comparing the application value for the four schemes.
