Train body structure must meet the requirements of strength and stiffness. Countries in the world require the vehicles to be checked in accordance with appropriate standards of strength, and finite element analysis is an effective means to achieve this goal. The main structures of the vehicles are sheet load-bearing structures. Finite element analysis of vehicles often has characteristics like large scale solutions and high morbid structure matrix, ect. Therefore, it is of great significance to study the features of shell element that suitable for vehicle and the rapid and large scale finite element solution method.Combination of plane stress state and bending state analysis method was adopted in this paper to study on the shell element. For the precision lack of common membrane element, detailed researches about accuracy, convergence and other properties of plane unite were carried out which based on generalized conforming condition and introduction of plane angle freedom structure. The paper realized the triangle and arbitrary quadrilateral bending element on basis of discrete Kirchhoff assumption. Besides, two kinds of high-performance shell elements were constructed by coupling unit, solving the total stiffness matrix singular problem of traditional shell element with no consideration of angle freedom. In order to adapt to the large scale vehicle structure solution, it discussed the one-dimensional full-compressed storage format for stiffness matrix; By improving the preconditioned conjugate gradient method, it reduced the matrix condition number effectively and achieved a fast solution algorithm suitable for the compress storage.Based on Visual C++platform, this paper developed the vehicle shell structure finite element analysis program. It can accomplish the plane stress, plate bending and shell structure finite element analysis. The paper also verified the accuracy of the program through the cantilever beam, scordelis curved roof and other standard examples. As to statics analysis of a certain passenger vehicle structure, the results show that the program could meet the needs of vehicle shell structure large scale solution. All these researches have a great engineering significance.
