Shield tunneling machine has been widely used in the underground rail and tunnel projects. At the same time, If the cutter is not promptly replaced after the wear failure, it not only increases the difficulty of the cutter replacement, but also affects the engineering progress. In the cutting process, the interaction between the cutter and geotechnical lead the cutter have a intense plastic deformation locally, the intense friction between the cutter and the geotechnical produces large amounts of cutting heat, resulting in cutter’s rapid tool wear, short life and high consumption. On the basis of analysis of shield cutter wear failure, this paper discusses the wear mechanism of shield cutter, and researches on the friction characteristics of the cutter, establishing a shield cutter temperature model, which is regard as one theoretical basis, analysis and discusses the wear characteristics of cutter. the research results and the main contents of this paper are as follows:(1) According to the engineering theory, this paper discusses the cutter’s wear mechanism during cutting. It also summarizes the shield cutter’s failure mode, and analyzes the reasons to the failure of the tool. Based on the cutter’s microscopic wear form, it also analyzes the cutter wear mechanism.(2) Based on force model and the motion law of the cutter, it analyzes the heat generated in the cutting process. And through the cutter and geotechnical energy distribution of heat energy, it establishes the temperature model of the cutter cutting.(3) According to the heat conduction theory and basic theory of finite element method, it analyzes the shield cutter and gets a temperature field and the distribution of stress field of it during the cutting process with the help of ANSYS (a finite element analysis software).(4) It measures the temperature distribution changing rule of different cutter in different penetration by infrared thermal imager.(5) Based on the analysis of the obtained model by shield the tool wear mechanism, it obtains a wear rule of the shield cutter’s different structural parameters in different cutting conditions, considering the cutter structure parameters, cutting parameters by using the rotary shield cutter cutting test-bed.
