| There is an special position of Gaodi Street in the center of the new city of Guangzhou. Since the street had emerged in Song Dynasty, it turned from an suburban area to be in the new city which until the middle of Qing Dynasty had its form come to stay. In the very one hundred years between the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Public of China, there were great changes in Guangzhou. The feudal city which had more than two thousands years’history turned rapidly to become a modern city. The area around Gaodi Street have remained huge historic streets and houses, which could show the typical urbanmorphologic evolution of this period.According to two basic clues, one is the time in which the transition happened, and the other is the scale of urban space, which from macro to microcosmic, dissected the urbanmorphologic transiton of Gaodi Street and the salt merchant family house in it. The main research are the Cause-and-effect relationship between the Gaodi Street and the city and the houses’form of one salt merchants’family in the new city. Chapter One is about the background of the research and the problems which should be focused on..From Chapter Two to Chapter Five are the subject sections of the thesis, which from three scales which were New City, Gaodi Street and Xu’s family, analysis the spacial struction and urbanmorphology of the Gaodi area. In Chapter Two which dating back to the generation of the city and its developments, it explained the relationship both between the new city and the old city, and the merchants’family. In Chapter three it concluded typic urbanmorphology with different functions around the Gaodi Street. In Chapter Four by means of Xu’s case which had forty one title deeds for Xu’s house, it show that how a big salt merchant family enlarge there family houses in Gaodi Street. Then in Chapter Five it analysised during the modern municipal administration, how the morphology of the area changed.Other than the analytical method of the urbanmorphology of these area, it also introduced the social system, land transaetion and neighorhood autonomy, etc. to help the thesis to show a multi-dimensional interpretation of the Gaodi Street in that period. |
