Not only the expectation of function but also the convenience of the location havebeen rising along with the rapid develop of China’s economy. After medium and smallflats had became mainstream flats, its advantages of economical, eco-friendly have metthe need of majorities. However, the limitation on its space raised the awareness of itsdrawbacks such as limited space, insufficient functions andunsatisfied comfortableness. Hence, designers started trying to enhance the comfortless,which developed the concept of “LOFT”.The word “Loft” came from the west, its origin was to portray a new lifestyle.Then it was translated as “the top level flat”, initially referred to the top floor offactories or warehouses. In its early years, artists had been using them as their studios.The notion of “Loft flat” was firstly introduced in New York during1940s. By the endof20thcentury, it has became the conception of postmodernism merged with the feelingof industrialisation, then it gradually turning into a model of western work-livingfashion, and was well-spread globally.Conceived as a unique branch of architecture design in China, it has graduallyevolving to a trendy lifestyle. Apart from its features as flexibility, and rich functions,its easily accessible location has won its potential consumers’ attention. Nonetheless,China’s national condition and policies have led to the result of the scarcity of thedomestic research on high-rise departments.This essay has developed an overall analysis and summaries on “loft” departmentsand an academic research on its theories. Proceeded with high-rise departments, thisessay further analysed the pros and cons of “LOFT” departments. Followed with ademonstration of the application of its space design. Summerised its features on aspectsof environmental phycology and “Housing and Living Science”. Based on theobjectives of energy conservation and utilization of space, selectively analysed theliving modes of “LOFT” departments, Moreover, this essay examined its uniquenessand its potential, opened up a new direction for medium and small apartments design.Meanwhile, by having investigated its core features, this essay promoted patterns for itsdevelopment.
