As an important part of a thermal power plant, it is an inevitable trend for coal silo to become giant because of the rising coal price and growing demand for electricity as well as the stricter demand for environmental protection. Compared with small and medium silo, it is much more necessary to control the cracks, deformation and internal forces of giant coal silos. Scholars both home and abroad have taken extensive research work on this topic during recent years, since the statical and dynamical theories about giant coal silo are premature, there are not effective controlling means yet. There are not complete standards to refer to for the design and construction of silos especially large diameter ones, and design theories still need to improve.Based on The Finite Element Method, considering the different mechanical characteristics of soil, foundation, silo body and prestressed steel, a rational model was established in this article. By this model, statical analysis, thermal stress analysis, modal analysis and spectrum analysis are carried out, some statical characteristics of the silo are obtained; meanwhile, the arrangement and optimization of reinforcement are taken, some conclusions which could be referred for engineer design are gained: displacement, hoop stress and vertical tensile stress at the silo hole are bigger than other parts, some strengthen measures must taken therefore; inside and outside temperature difference has great influence on hoop stress, which may approach the resistance to tensile stress. Season temperature changes affect the deformation of the structure a lot; by adjusting the initial model parameters, a reasonable reinforcement assembly design is proposed; anti-seismic capability of the silo hole is the worst; the dynamic effect maximizes when the excitation orientation of acceleration shock response spectrum is perpendicular to the silo hole.
