As the silos have the advantages of large capacity, small floor coverage, low operation cost, they are widely employed to store some granular solid such as coal, cement and grain. With the increasing project demand and the gradual improvement and refinement of engineer and construction technology, diameter and height of the silos, that markedly increased nowadays, are more than those in the past. To meet the needs of practical engineering, two types of high temperature storage silo were analysed systematically for mechanical performance. The following work was conducted in this thesis.(1) Finite element analysis of60m diameter circular steel silo for storage of cement clinker has been carried out in a variety of load cases. Summarizing the existing algorithms, calculation method for the temperature of steel silo wall that is caused by hot clinker was proposed. Circumferential stress, axial stress, Mises equivalent stress and axial displacement of the silo wall, were compared between single and composite load cases. By the analysis of the silo with large openings on the wall, an optimized design scheme of stiffening rib was proposed. Considering of the effect of welded joint imperfection on stability of structure, the geometric nonlinear stability analysis of the large diameter steel silo was carried out.(2) Based on the ASHRAE model and FEM thermal theory, the temperature field of steel silo wall was studied under the effect of solar radiation and convection heat transfer. The mechanical performance of the silo was analysed under the solar radiation, and the result was compared with other load condition.(3) A new type silo structure between square silo and circular silo was proposed, which is a honeycomb-type hexagonal silo. Considering the effect of temperature action, which is caused by environment and hot coal material, temperature difference calculation method of the concrete silo wall was proposed based on the method recommended by the relevant specification. The mechanical analysis was carried out between single and group silos, under a variety of load cases.12kinds of the potential unfavorable working position of coal piling were proposed, the most unfavorable working position was confirmed by the comparison. At last, a preliminary feasibility analysis for honeycomb steel silos was carried out.
