With the rapid development of railway transportation, railway noise has become a great concern. Wheel-rail noise is one of the main noise sources of urban rail transit. The study on wheel and rail vibration and noise control technology could effectively reduce the vibration and noise from the source. Many different kinds of low noise wheel have been developed, among which the most economical and effective one is the ring damped wheel. Besides reducing rolling noise, the ring damped wheel can reduce squeal as well.In order to gain more understanding on the vibration and noise characteristic of ring damped low noise subway wheels and their reduction property, this study focuses on the effects of noise and vibration reduction of the ring damped wheel. Field tests and comprehensive analysis of the vibration and sound radiation characteristics of a in service subway ring damped wheel were conducted.First, interior and outside standard sound pressure and the vibration of bogie, axle box, and floor vibration in axial and vertical direction were measured, based on the international and domestic relative standards, for a subway ring damped wheel that is in service. The measurements were made at both tangential and curved running conditions of the wheel.Second, in order to understand the noise reduction effect of the ring damped wheel on wheel-rail noise, comparative analysis of the near-field acoustic radiation characteristics of the ring damped wheels and the standard wheels were conducted based on the test results. The analyses not only contain the time histories of the sound pressure and spectral characteristics, but also take the wheel-rail noise characteristic into consideration. Because wheel noise was mainly in mid and high-frequency, the sound radiation characteristics of the damping ring wheel were analyzed in both bands, which can better reflect the good noise reduction property of the ring damped wheel in mid and high-frequency.Third, in order to explore the effect of the noise reduction of the ring damped wheels on interior and exterior noise, a comparative analysis of the interior and exterior noise characteristics for two kinds of wheels was conducted at the condition of running on a straight line at a constant speed. Meanwhile, in order to further analysis the ring damped wheel’s noise reduction effect on curve squeal, the test also measured the interior noise and vibration when the train running over a curve with a radius of654.2m.Lastly, in order to understand the vibration characteristics of the ring damped wheel, the comparative analysis of the vibration acceleration spectrum distribution characteristics was conducted when the train is running on the tangential and curved lines at a constant speed.
