Current collection using pantographs and overhead contact lines is commonly used to supply power to electric trains. With speed improved significantly of high-speed train, quality of current collection becomes much worse because of the effect of wave motion of overhead contact lines excited by pantograph. Moreover, the wave motion of contact lines may cause the damage of pantograph-catenary system. On the purpose to find the propagation laws of this wave motion, I carried out this study. In this paper, some methods to calculate the characteristic parameters and propagation laws were proposed. Based on these calculation methods and propagation laws, we can modify both the structure of overhead lines and the matching relations of pantograph-catenary system. Finally, quality of current collection would be improved. In order to get clear results, physical models were proposed and some related dynamic simulations were carried on by ANSYS and RECURDYN. Base on these simulations, we found that the wavelength was not a fixed value; it changed with the different parameters but the train speed. And with the increase of train speed, amplitude of the wave motion also increases. At last, we brought forward four methods to enlarge the ratio of wave speed, also we carried out dynamics simulations or experiments for each method. The results prove that each method can enlarge the ratio of wave speed.
