| Since the Opium War in1840, due to the Western colonial invasion, Chinese city entered the period of the modern social transformation. Harbin is a typical example in the early modern city development history. Harbin took the build of Middle East railroad as an opportunity to start the modern urban construction. The railway had played a very important role in the formation and development of the Harbin city. Taking this as a starting point, this paper selected the period1898—1931which tsarist Russia dominant in Harbin as a research object, discussed the construction of Harbin city rise under the influence of the railway.On the basis of a large number of historical data collected, the paper summarizes the modem Harbin city construction during the period1898—1931under the influence of the railway, takes the focus on the formation and construction characteristics of the railway subsidiaries; then using the urban construction theory, analyzed city’s the function zoning under the influence of the railway and construction characteristics of different districts, and explores the formation of urban axis; finally focus on the planning of new urban city construction are analyzed in detail, discusses the city square, main street, railway construction, residential morphology and so on; comprehensively elaborates the profound meaning of the construction of Harbin city under the influence of the railway.The modern Harbin city construction during the period1898—1931under the influence of railway is comprehensively summarized in this paper. Explaining the influence of modern Western planning theory and design techniques to modern Harbin urban construction, the research can be more comprehensive understanding of Harbin city modern building characteristics and in-depth understanding of the city’s history and characteristics, and provide a reference for the future development.
