Abstract/Summary:
Ta Keo Temple, which is World Cultural Heritage in Cambodia, is a splendid representative of Angkor Khmer architecture. The main structures of Ta Keo Temple are generally in good condition, while local damage is severe which can be indicated from the follows: the four corners of the terrace on second floor is totally destroyed; the stone blocks of the turret have fell in large scale; some pylons of the laterial rooms have inclined severely; the vaults of the gallery have collapsed. Based on the knowledge of material, single structure type and linging method used in Ta Keo Temple, the stress and deformation mechanism of each single structure under gravity load is searched in this paper, collapse simulations for possible settlements are taken and the stability under exsiting settlement is evaluated by using the critical settlement calculated from numerical analysis. The main works are summarized as follows:(1) The characteristics of the basic materials, the basic structure forms, layout features and relevant damaging factors were summarized according to various aspects of the Angkor monuments, which are the essential prerequisite of the study and protection work of Angkor.(2) On the basis of structural mechanics, typical structural component analyses were made to classify the primary structural characteristics of the Khmer structures.A reasonable contact model was established in conformity to the special building methods of Khmer architecture. It can be a reference for the simulation of other stone or brick buildings.(3) The 3D finite element models of the typical turrets and pylons were constructed to conduct stability analysis of the main substructures of Ta Keo Temple. The numerical analysis results are in good agreement with the existing states of the structures of Ta Keo Temple, and the potential risks were also estimated.(4) Displacement of each single structure is categorized and calculated, and the critical value is found. Stability of each single structure is calculated by using the proposed assessment method called critical value based method.(5) According to the results of the numerical anlysis, some measures were proposed to restore and protect the structure of Ta Keo Temple in order to maintain the World Heritage for long.
