As the requirements of vehicle-lightweight, environmental protection and energysaving the application of magnesium alloys on the vehicles is becoming increasinglywide for their lightest commercial structural metallic materials. Since the wheels areimportant components of vehicles, using magnesium alloys to replace traditional steeland aluminum alloys is helpful for not only reducing weight of vehicles, but alsoreducing energy consumption and emissions, and improving feeling in vehicles. However, due to the poor corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy in the naturalenvironment, surface protection for wheels made of magnesium alloys will be quiteurgent and necessary. Therefore, the development of surface protection methods forwheels made of magnesium alloys will play a key role in promoting application ofwheels products made of magnesium alloys. In this paper, the author first introduced the research and applicationstatus of magnesium alloys at home and abroad, mainly focusing on the magnesiumalloy wheels, and then compared a variety of surface protection process used formagnesium alloy wheels. According to the weaknesses of magnesium alloysand working environment of wheels, namely the erosion from mud andwater, and splash damage to coatings by rocks, it should be appropriate to employcomplex organic coatings (pretreatment layer+multi-layer organic coating)forprotecting magnesium alloy wheels.Aiming to obtain effective surface protection for the magnesium alloy motorcyclewheels produced by Chongqing SinoST Co. Ltd. and Dongguan E-ande Sci.&Tech. Co.,Ltd., based on the studies of technical and economic evaluation in theorganic coating on the magnesium alloys, two types of complex coatings (pretreatmentlayer+multi-layer organic coating) of high anti-scratch, anti-corrosion and weredeveloped. Their pencil hardness of8H and7H, anti-sprayed salt time of1000hoursand800hours separately (national standard:,100hours), and decoration have alreadymet the need of market. At last, the composition and properties of the coatings werestudied and analyzed. The main achievements of this study are as follows:â‘ According to the characteristics of magnesium alloys and the requirements ofmagnesium alloy wheels, two types of complex organic coatings were developed, and an invention patent is being applied;â‘¡The surface and cross section morphology observation of organic complexcoatings were carried out by employing the metallographic microscope and the scanningelectron microscopy for; the microstructure and composition of the organic complexcoatings were investigated with EDS analysis and X-ray diffraction;â‘¢After a variety of performance tests carried out on the complex coatings, theappearance, adhesion to the magnesium matrix, the coating hardness, and the corrosionresistance were investigated, and get clear comparison data and analytical results, whichwill complete the theoretical basis of the surface protection research for magnesiumalloy wheels.
