Wind tunnel balance is a key measurement equipment in the wind tunnel testing. With the scopeof force tested by wind tunnel becoming wider and the testing precision becoming higher, straingauge balance has become the most important device for force measurement in the wind tunnel testfor its outstanding advantages.In this thesis,a high efficiency design method for high performance strain gauge balance isgiven.After In-depth study,a new optimization design method based on the theory of optimalstiffness is proposed. When each component is affected by full load, the output strain gauges shouldbe all close to a determinate value, which is considered as the first optimization aim; then the highestcomposite stiffness of each degree of freedom is calculated, which is considered as the secondoptimization aim. The optimization design for strain balance should be finished with satisfying therequirement of strength and geometry. After a mathematical model is established, optimizationparameters can be calculated efficiently by preparation constrained and non-smooth multi-objectiveoptimization program with mathematical software. Then a parametric model is generated based on theoptimization parameters, the working conditions of strain gauge balance is analyzed by the finiteelement method (FEM),and the output of balance for each component in all conditions is calculated inorder to validate the theoretical design. The output interference between various components can beexamined by FEM and then the position of weak strength can be found out, so that comprehensivestudy of the effect of optimization can be conducted. Finally the fabrication and calibration of thestrain gauge balance is completed, the using formula for the balance is calculated, and the feasibilityof optimization methods by processing the calibration data is assessed. Experiments show that thesatisfactory results can be obtained by this method.Results of the research will be used as referencefor the design of such strain gauge balance.
