Structural optimization technique combines element structural analysis withoptimization algorithm. It can find the best structural design in a given design space. Andwhen problems are found in the virtual test stage, it will give improved programs.Optimal results can be achieved to make the program meet the specified designrequirements, and excessive work is not needed when optimization methods are applied.Therefore, the structural optimization technique has been widely used in the modernautomotive design.Taking certain SUV frame as the object of study, the work, based on frame finiteelement model and material layout path by topology optimization by predecessors, asfollowing is done in this paper.Firstly, transform the solid structural frame by imposing draw constraint into hollowstructural frame based on the standards of bending stiffness. Secondly, the stress resultsare computed based on of finite element analysis. From the results the conclusion can bemade that the material are not made the best use of. And the optimal thicknesses ofvertical and horizontal beams can be obtained by size optimization, which taking theproperty of thicknesses of vertical and horizontal beams as design variables. Then shapeoptimization for the connectors are taken to avoid stress concentration of joints. Thirdly,topology optimization for solder joints of the connectors is taken. Finally, theperformances of the frames before and after optimization are compared by the finiteelement analysis. The new frame has been improved significantly. Therefore, there issome reference value to frame lightweight in this paper.
