Adobe house, with a long history, is an eco-energy saving, green, affordablearchitectural forms, and still widely used in China’s rural area. However, in recent years,earthquakes occur frequently in China, it causes a large number of the adobe housescollapsed, significant casualties and economic losses in the rural area. In this paper, first,the formation mechanism of adobe house cracks, shear failure mechanism and seismicdesign are studied based on the related literature, experimental and investigations data.Second, The seismic performance with the different parameters of adobe walls isanalyzed based on ABAQUS finite element software, the specific content andconclusions are as follows.1. The factors, including soil type, temperature, moisture content, the differentialsettlement of the foundation, the larger load, are the main reason for crack formation ofthe adobe wall, and corresponding control measures are proposed in the paper. Thefailure mechanism of adobe walls are obtained under bidirectional loading, in addition,that adobe material, vertical load and high-depth ratio, are the main factors to affect thewall performance, is indicated.2. The elastic deformation of the adobe structure should be checked under theeffect of the minor earthquakes, and the strength should be also checked under the effectof minor earthquake and other load. After strengthening detail of seismic design, theelastic and plastic deformation of the structure weak layer could be not checked in therare earthquake. 3. Using ABAQUS finite element software, Hysteresis curve, skeleton curve,ductility, stress and strain contours are obtained under biaxial stress. Then, The impactof structural column, beam, tie bar, thickness ratio on seismic performance of the rawwalls are discusses.Through the analysis, the paper get useful conclusions about method and details ofseismic design, and provide the basis for the development of standards.
