Study Of The Roof: From Form To Function

Roof which located on the top of building is always the visual focus. Roof can define the contours of the external form of the building as well as the interior space .It plays an important role in the architecture design. Nowadays, so many new technologies and new ideas emerge among this diversification times. It makes it possible that roof can have different functions and more impressive forms. Absolutely, It is necessary to make a new research and analysis about the roof of building.This study mainly talks about roof’s different functions and the form changes brought by the function changes. Based on the research and analysis of roof’s multi-functional development, further classification and summary of the different functions of roof, this paper collects lots of examples and cases in order to show the rich functionality with the development of building roof and various of possibilities of the patterns formed by the multi-use of roof.Firstly,the whole paper illustrates the development progress of roof with the introductions of every turning point in the progress, and makes a presentation of the basic function of roof and new changes. Besides, the utilization of the roof space and roof’s role played in the building’s improvement are fanally disscussed in the first part; Secondly, it talks about the rooftop salor and green roof with specific description and case analysis, and expresses the attitude of the architecture in the building’s fifth elevation’s design standing on the city’s point. The different mathods to keep the unity of metropolitan city and traditional city also is referred in this part. At last , the introduction of the cutting-edge architectural theory——vertical farming is included in the paper, it makes an inspiring guidance and analysis according to the future of the roof .
