Since the industrial revolution occurred, natural ecology and the quality ofliving environment have deteriorated sharply, which becomes a serious threat to thesurvival and development of human being. The essential cause is the contradiction ofhuman and nature in the natural ecology view. Residential building is the earliestoutcome of human activities due to the survival need. Living environment is theinterface of human being and nature, the design of which relates directly to therelationship between human being and nature. It’s a big concern of the designerwhether the living environment develops in harmony with nature environment, whichinfluences the project and the operating cost in short term, and living environment inthe long term. The paper analyzes two layers of ecological view of nature and livingenvironment design, and the main content and innovative point are as follows:1. Living environment is the medium between the mankind and nature, and alsopart of the natural ecology system. The harmony of living and natural environment isthe premise and foundation of building and maintaining a good living environment. The design of living environment is influenced and directed by the view of nature andecology, which is reflected in the level of practice. The traditional Chinese simplenatural and ecology view is newly understood and researched in the paper and is alsocompared with the modern ecology ideological trend, which finally leads to a proofthat there is a inherent relationship between the aforementioned two views. Thetraditional simple natural and ecology view is the direct understanding of therelationship between the mankind and nature, while the modern ecology view, whichis the refinement of the traditional, is based on the modern science and explains theproduce of ecology system specifically. The meaning of the research between thetraditional and modern view of nature and ecology lies in inspiring and leading to thereconstruction of the basic values of the modern living environment designers.2. Chinese traditional civil residence is an outcome of long-term livingenvironment designing and construction practices of ancient civilian in responding tonatural and social factors. It is the example of the achieved unity of livingenvironment and nature and ecology in the traditional agricultural society and thepractice of harmony between the nature and human in the view of natural ecology. Moreover, it’s the valuable model of design of modern living environment. The valueof traditional houses to modern society is not only in its practical measures, but also inits summary of these practices through the typical experience and eco-design theory.Based on comprehensive study of the literature and objects, this paper reinterprets theecology experience of Chinese traditional houses in terms of site selection and layout, material construction and building design and carries out an empirical comparativestudy with modern living environment design in such aspects. It also carries out theanalysis and appraisal of the connection between the traditional and modern housingdesign concepts and ways of thinking and development in design patterns andtechnological implementation which provides the way of thinking for inheriting andcarrying forward the eco-experience of traditional residential design, and the design amodern living environment that satisfies the nature, economic and the needs of humanbeings.
