Redundancy and fault-tolerant machines are applied in the high reliability extensively. It is quite important of the research on fault-tolerant motors. Fault tolerant doubly salient machine had been developed in the new orientation of doubly salient machine. To better meet the requirements of fault-tolerance, it draws the benefit of the inherent fault-tolerance of the doubly salient machine and makes some improvements. In this paper, five-phase doubly salient machine for the starting point, electromagnetic doubly salient generator is analyzed, and the fault-tolerant performance of the generator with the modular electric excitation winding is discussed.This paper describes the basic principles and structure of the five-phase doubly salient electromagnetic generator. Five-phase two typical structure of the motor unit 10/8 and 10/4 by using Finite element simulation software Ansoft from the structure, static parameters, unload characteristics and external characteristics are analyzed and compared on. Then the parameters on the performance of fault tolerance. Secondly, this paper proposes three types of motor structure 20/16-2, 20/16-1, 20/16-ft. 20/16-2 and 20/16-1 in which a traditional five-phase doubly salient electromagnetic generator use a centralized winding. 20/16-ft uses the modular winding to implement phase-phase winding between the physical and thermal isolation. This article focuses on the different generation external 20/16-2 mode to analyze the basic characteristics and discusses the basic principles of power generation by observing the simulation waveforms.20/16-2 model of the motor iron loss were calculated for the iron loss calculation provides an effective method. Finally, the characteristics of the motor and 20/16-1 are compared.After the analysis of the basic characteristics of the 20/16-ft, the paper focuses on the performance discussion when the generator occurs the faults which are one phase failures such as winding open-circuit, diode open-circuit, winding end short-circuit, diode tube short-circuit,etc.Finally, in a three-phase doubly salient motor prototype with the external single-phase bridge power circuit, the motor characteristics of normal and failure is experimentally verified. The results show that the single-phase bridge can achieve better fault tolerance effect.
