As the constant growth of development and competition in Socio-economic and scientific technology, the engraving process is playing an important role in people’s daily life and industrial production. At meanwhile, market demand has put forward higher requirements to engraving techniques, but traditional engraving process dominated by manual processing has been unable to meet the requirements of this development. Along with the development of computer technology, numerical control technology and robot technology, the CNC(Computer Numerical Control) engraving machine has acquired a good developing opportunity, and in such a circumstance, it became to progress towards automatic direction. This subject mainly researched engraving machine CNC system based on’PC and motion control card’mode, and built a small engraving processing unit with an existing robot which uses the robot to load and unload an object. The subject also developed a CNC system for the engraving processing unit. The working environment of this system is Windows XP and IPC, and the software development platform is Visual C++and MFC. The research contents mainly include the following aspects:Firstly the paper analyzed the development history and the development trend of the numerical control technology. It introduced the CNC processing unit, Then introduced the current development situation of CNC engraving machine and robotics at home and abroad.Then, the paper described overall design of the engraving processing unit. It introduced the mechanical structure, hardware platform, software system of the overall system and the integration of engraving machine and robot. Software system mainly includes translation of NC code, human-computer interaction, and motion control.Next, the paper focused on the translation of NC code and tool radius compensation in the CNC system of the engraving processing unit. In NC code translation section, the paper briefly introduced the structural characteristics of the NC code, and mainly introduced the opening and saving of NC code file, error checking and translation of the NC code. In the tool radius compensation section, the paper briefly introduced the principle and method of tool compensation, and developed the algorithm program based on using vector method to analyse and calculate the procedure of establishing and canceling the cutter compensation.On the basis of these researches, the paper developed a whole functional engraving processing unit CNC system. The test results have shown that the system ran at the expected level and was able to fulfill the requirement.
