The processability of cutting fluids refers to the efficiency exhibited in metal removing process, which has a close relationship with the machining results such as processing quality, power consumption, working efficiency, chip disposal, etc. As of today, evaluation of cutting fluids is still not mature, and practical cutting experiments are indispensable. This work focuses on the processability of cutting fluids and the main contents are as follows:First of all, based on the geometric and force relationship of metal cutting process, the certain parts of a cutter participating in the cutting process were discreted, and with the application of convetional orthogonal and inclined cutting theory, the model of rake face friction force was deduced. Then through optimization of geometric design, the measurement and calculation of input parameters within the model was facilitated. In the following experiments, the rake face friction force model was frequently applied for friction force calculatian and analysis. Finally, the rationality and necessity were validated by comparison of the rake face friction force and force components in Cartesian coordinate system.Secondly, focus on the core problem of evaluating cutting fluids’processability, CNC face milling experiment of plain carbon steel was conducted. Processability of water based cutting fluids was assessed in terms of cutting force, chip deformation and surface roughness, and key parameters influencing processability wers determined. Then, CNC face milling Experiments of316austenitic stainless steel and Fv520martensitic stainless steel were performed. Serrated degree (Gs) was introduced to characterize chip deformation of the saw tooth chip generated in machining stainless steel. In terms of316stainless steel, influence of cutting fluids type on cutting force, chip deformation, surface roughness and tool breakage was discussed, and the proper cutting parameters were confirmed; For Fv520stainless steel, influence of cutting fluids type on the processability was discussed, and the corresponding relationship between chip microscopic morphology and cutting force&surface roughness was analysized as well. Finally, CNC drilling experiments were conducted with the presence of cutting fluids, and the influence exerted on45steel,316austenitic stainless steel and Fv520martensitic stainless steel by oil based cutting fluids was investigated respectively. Influence on45steel,316austenitic stainless steel and Fv520martensitic stainless steel was determined as well by analysing drilling parameters. Experiments on tool life was executed and a comparison experiment of dry machining was conducted so as to determining the function of oil based cutting fluids in improving tool life.
