With the rapid development of shipbuilding industry, the cold forming technology has become ever more important in the modern world. This sort of technology involves the use of profile detection and research and development of CNC profile and relevant cold hydraulic equipment. It may bring many social and economic benefits if small and medium-sized shipyards can make full use of them.The paper at first introduces the development and history of the shipbuilding industry from domestic to foreign. For most of small and medium-sized shipyards, eye inspection has always been the tradition to inspect whether the profile of a straightened anti-curve line is straight. If it is not, there are some weaknesses such as low productivity and forming precision and extremely high cost. However, if we contrast the inspection of Machine Vision (MV) with contouring control to direct the forming of a profile, that will no longer be the case. This paper is based on MV to extract the profiles of a edge curve, and then to match the profiles on the edge of a spline curve, with the aim of controlling the profiles. But by the virtue of MV, the introduction of profile bending machines has enjoyed the benefits of good convenience, small footprint, better precision and stability, high efficiency and a high level of automatization.Next, in terms of MV and the principle of cold forming, this research is intended to adopt machine visual for cold forming bending machines. It mainly concerns with the following areas:the length of stepper and the curvature of spline; and the width between the fulcrums in the bending area. All of these research are primarily based on YLW through a series of parameters for profile bending machines. By experiment research and mathematical and citation methods, the conclusions are reached from the method of how to match profile curve and spline with their area sizes for high quality images.In addition, the paper is aimed at providing a research on every components of MV and the prototype of MV system set up on the bending machines when YLW combines with a series of these bending machines. As for the selection of lens and light source and their installations, a detailed study is carried out in relation to the MV system for profile bending machines. The ability to capture high quality images marks the birth of the MV system. To obtain high quality images, HALCON is then used as a basis for image calibration, image correction and image stitching.In the end, by applying HALCON functional operators and comparing different operators at the same time, the operator suitable for edge extraction is obtained. After the edge profile is obtained, the same coordinate of profile curve and spline is subsequently established to examine if they match one another. This is therefore the method that can assess two of the best results.
