Carbohydrates linked to other biomolecule classes are termed as’glycoconjugates’. They include ubiquitous and biologically important biomolecule sub-classes, such as glycoproteins, peptidoglycans and glycolipids. In this paper, two series of functional glycoconjugates were designed and synthesised.The first series of compounds are Glycolipids. Glycolipids are the ubiquitous membrane constituents and act important roles in many cell-surface-associated reactions. This paper studies antibacterial activity of some synthetic glycolipid derivatives by disk diffusion method and tube dilution method. Initially, we find that the in vitro antimicrobial efficacy of some α-or β-O-galactolipids and their anomeric mixtures with saturated carbon chains of different length was assessed on S. aureus, B. subtilis and E. coli. Results reveal that the anomeric mixture of two O-galactolipids with a12C-lipid end inhibits B. subtilis at a low concentration. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of this mixture was determined to be0.06mM. Liposomes have been widely used for their ability to enhance the stability of incorporated drugs, deliver them to target organs, reduce their toxicity, and enhance their pharmacological effects. Liposomes containing glycolipids have potential in improving their potential cell targetability.The second class of compounds is resveratrol glucoside derivatives constituted by a triazole as linkage. The synthetic route was preliminary explored. The azido-sugar and alkyne building blocks, and some useful intermediates have been successfully synthesized. The construction of the target resveratrol glucoside would be further carried out. The resveratrol glucosides have potential to be applied as molecular probes.
