The water-swellable rubber (WSR) which was regarded as a new sort of functional sealing and caulking material, has been widely used in many applications, such as water conservancy, construction, traffic, etc. In the industrial production, the WSR was usually prepared by mechanical blending.In this paper, grft of acrylamide and maleicanhydride onto chlorinated polyethylene has been performed by swelling suspension polymerization. The effects of polymerization conditions on graft degree (GD) and graft efficiency (GE), including the CPE, MAH, initiator amount, the mass ratio between AM and MAH, have been investigated, and the optimum reaction conditions were found through orthogonal experiments. In this experiment, the significant influencing factors on GD were in the lessened sequence of AM, CPE, BPO and MAH, and the optimal reaction conditions is BPO2.5%(wt%), CPE lg, AM2.4g, MAH0.4g, reaction time6h,teaction temperature75℃The significant influencing factors on GE were in the lessened sequence of AM, MAH, CPE and BPO, the optimal reaction conditions is BPO2.5%(wt%), CPE3g, AM2g,MAH0.4g reaction time6h,teaction temperature75℃。 The graft degree (GD) and graft efficiency (GE) was calculated gravimetrically, and the graft copolymer was characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and contact angle study.The monomer’s water solubility was large, it distributed itself between the oil and aqueous phases when it was copolymerizatied with CPE. It indicated the partition coefficient was a function of temperature, monomers and water-to-oil ratio. In the initial stage, the diffusion rate of monomer from the water phase to oil phase was rapid. Two hours later, the monomer concentration in aqueous phase decrease slowly, nearly80%of the monomers have migrated from the water phase to oil phase after2.5hours. It indicated that the monomer’s water solubility had a great impact of the mechanism of suspension polymerization.Water swelling rubber was prepared by mechanical blending. The influence of compatibilizer, absorbent resin and DCP amounts on its water-absorbent properties and mechanical properties was discussed. The results show that the degree of equilibrium swelling increased with increasing amounts of water-absorbent resin. Due to poor compatibility between two phases, water-absorbent resin was easy to spate out from polymerblend. In the blending process, adding compatibilizer can increase the interaction between two phases and reduce the rate of mass loss. The addition of DCP could improve the tensile strength and decrease the rate of mass loss.
