Nylon-6(PA6) is a widely used resin. ABS High-rubber Powder (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene High-Rubber Powder) which abbreviation is ABS-HRP can be a good toughener for PA6. PA6/ABS-HRP alloy has excellent integrated performance. To some extent, mineral powder filling modification can reduce cost as well as affect performance which can be better to meet market demand. This paper studied the fracture morphology and properties of PA6/ABS-HRP alloy with different compatibilizer contents, different compatibilizers, different ABS-HRP contents, different mineral powder contents and different kinds of mineral powder.Maleic anhydride functionalized compatibilizers are commonly used compatibilizers for PA6/ABS-HRP alloy. Fracture morphology by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and performance testing showed that compatibilizer contents and types have a great influence on the fracture morphology and properties of PA6/ABS-HRP alloy. The brittle-ductile transition can be achieved with the right compatibilizer and the right amount. For the compatibility of PA6/ABS-HRP alloy, N-phenylmaleimide-styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (NPMI-Sty-MAH) is better than the styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA). SMA is better than ABS grafting maleic anhydride (ABS-g-MAH). PA6/ABS-HRP alloy has the best compatibility with2%~6%NPMI-Sty-MAH and an integrated performance with6%~12%NPMI-Sty-MAH.Fracture morphology by SEM and performance testing showed that ABS-HRP as a toughened composition has a great influence on the fracture morphology and properties of PA6/ABS-HRP alloy. With the increase of the ABS-HRP (0~50%), for PA6/ABS-HRP alloy, the fracture performance gets brittle-ductile transition, elongation at break is increased, and the melt flow rate, flexural strength, flexural modulus, ball indentation hardness, density and Vicat softening point continue to lower; the tensile strength and izod notched impact first increased and then decreased.This paper modified PA6/ABS-HRP alloy with talc, barium sulfate, glass beads, hollow microspheres which are commonly used as mineral powder fillers. Fracture morphology by SEM and performance testing showed that the mineral powder contents and types have a great influence on the fracture morphology and properties of PA6/ABS-HRP alloy. For PA6/ABS-HRP alloy, proper amount talc has a good reinforcing effect, barium sulfate and glass beads are helpful for toughness, and hollow microspheres has a bad effect on toughness because of its poor compatibility with PA6/ABS-HRP alloy and large size, but good for lightweight materials because of its low density.This paper provides a reference for formulation design from the theory and data base to adapt to different market demands.
