Liquid phase tends to produce great foam in the column when systems contain alcohol amine solutions. Excessive foam can affect quality of products or even lead to serious operation problems at some extremely conditions.Hydraulics experiment is taken in the1500mm X450mm column using combined directed trays, which behaves great performance in non-foaming systems. The experiment chooses sodium lauryl sulfate (SDS)-air as the foaming system, and by contrary, define water-air as the Non-foaming system. Both of hydraulics data of the two systems are acquired, and the characteristics of pressure drop, entrainment, and weeping rate of the foaming system is studied. Also the hydraulics difference between the two systems is argued. Results indicate that the operation range of the foaming system is lower than non-foaming system, and hydraulics of foaming system has unique characteristics. The experiment phenomenon and conclusion provide important evidence and reference to the column design and operation process. Also the simulation is taken for MDEA desulfurization process by Aspen Plus, and column internals parameters are designed base on the experiment data and simulation consequence. Results indicate that it is necessary to reduce Fo and L at a rational range, and also ample allowance for HT and lower height for outweir are recommended for foaming system.
