Nd:YAG(neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) crystal, which owns thewidest application as solid laser material, is mainly used in industry, military, medicaland scientific research. But the single crystal of YAG has the drawbacks of long periodof manufacture, high cost, and difficulties of generation in large size and being highlydoped, which have restricted its wider applications. Neodymium-doped yttriumaluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) transparent ceramics is regarded as a new generation oflaser material. Owing to its excellent thermal, optical, mechanical andphysical-chemical properties, it has been widely used as phosphors and laser media. Incomparison with Nd:YAG single crystal, transparent ceramics has attracted moreattention in recent years because of its lower cost, being highly doped, higher laserpower etc.In this dissertation,1.0at%Nd:YAG transparent ceramic was fabricated by asolid-state reaction method before vacuum sintering using high-purity α-Al2O3, Y2O3and Nd2O3as raw materials. By trying different additives and different reaction methods, analyzing all factors about light transmittance, finally high transparent Nd:YAGceramics were fabricated and the samples were characterized by SEM, XRD andUV-visible spectrometer.
