Transparent neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garent (Nd:YAG) ceramics is regard as a new kind of laser material, owing to its excellent thermal, optical and physical properties. Compared with Nd:YAG single crystal, Nd:YAG transparent ceramic and its preparation technology offer several advantages, such as: fabricated in large size easily, massively produced with lower cost and obtained higher output.In present work,1.0at%Nd:YAG transparent ceramic was fabricated by a solid-state reaction method using high-purityα-Al2O3,Y2O3 and Nd2O3 as raw material. The transparence of the samples were improved by trying different additives, sintering temperature and forming pressure. The samples were characterized by SEM, XRD and UV-visible spectrometer. By continuous improvement of the experiment methods, Nd:YAG transparent ceramic whose transparence is comparable to that of Nd:YAG single crystal's with thickness of 2mm was obtained. At last, the foreground of its application and the development of transparent YAG laser ceramics are also forecasted.
