Fatty acid methyl ester was synthesized through methylation using palm stearinas raw materials in this article. Through two methods of concentrated sulfuric acidand chlorosulfonic acid, fatty acid methyl ester sulfonates was respectivelysynthesized stepping by sulfonation, aging reaction, reesterification/bleaching andneutralization. MES was purified by alcohol crystallization for several times. Physicaland chemical properties of MES were discussed. In addition, biodegradation kineticsof MES was investigated.Methyl ester sulfonates was synthesized through using fatty acid methyl ester asraw materials, concentrated sulfuric acid as sulfonating agent. The optimal conditonsin lab were approached through single factor experiments and the orthogonaloptimization experiments as follows: n(concentrated sulfuric acid):n(methylpalmitate)=1.55:1.0, m(concentrated sulfuric acid):m(methyl palmitate)=2.0:1.0, thesulfination was at90℃for35min, the aging process was at80℃for25min. In thiscondition, the final outcome which was shallow white granular products consisted of25.36%of MES.Saturtated fatty acid methyl ester was prepared through using palm acid methylester by high pressure hydrogenation. Then, methyl ester sulfonates was synthesizedthrough using saturtated fatty acid methyl ester as raw materials, chlorosulfonic acidas sulfonating agent. The optimal conditons in lab were approached through singlefactor experiments and the orthogonal optimization experiments as follows: droppingtemperature was50℃, m(chloroform):m(methyl palmitate)=2.0:1.0, n(chlorsulfonicacid):n(methyl palmitate)=1.55:1.0, the sulfination was at90℃for60min, the agingprocess was at80℃for70min. In this condition, the final outcome which was paleyellow cream products and consisted of64.36%of MES.MES was purified by alcohol crystallization for several times and purity wasmore than95%. Meanwhile the qualitative analysis of MES product was carried onthrough HPLC-ELSD and the results indicated that liquid phase map came to singlepeak, and peak form was preferable, which was the high purity of MES products. Inaddition, the structure appraisal of MES product was characterized by infraredspectrum and mass spectrometry. Investigated surface chemical properties of MES product, the CMC value of purified MES product was determined by method ofconductivity and was about9.570mmol·L-1, Emulsifying ability, Foaming ability,Stability were very well.Biodegradation kinetics of MES product was investigated by the methyleneblue-spectrophotometer method, and obtained biodegradation of MES well, whichdegradation rate was more than95%. This study revealed that MES degradationprocess contained chemical degradation and microbial degradation. The speed ofbiological degradation was influenced by temperature, initial concentration, thegrowth of microorganism and environment around and so on. According to the resultof the experiment, the MES kinetics equation for degradation was obtained.
