It is very important for city development to design and construct an economic and effective sewage pipe network system with the increase of population, development of urbanization process and dramatic increase of discharged sewage. In this paper, the design optimization of sewage pipe network system was conducted to improve the drainage efficiency taking the sewage pipe network in southern area of Xiaoshan distrct as an example.In2004, according to the issue of sewage effluent from nine towns in southern area of Xiaoshan district, one special plan was carried out (hereinafter referred to as the original plan), and the predicted sewage flow was higher based on the plan to build industrial parks in every rural town. With a new round of Hangzhou city planning and readjustment of industrial structure started, the increase of industrial wastewater flow was slow in the southern areas due to energy conservation and emission reductions, clean production, and the produced wastewater is expected to be far less than the one predicted in the original plan, therefore, it is very urgent to optimize the current design of sewage pipe network system in southern area.In order to predict wastewater quantity accurately, the investigation on the recent and proposed sewage was made according to the different land usage combined with the onsite inspection on the existing industrial wastewater. The scale construction and pipe diameter were changed, the building projects were applied based on the forward plan and the device configuration was chosen by the recent plan, so that the recent investment was reduced and the development demand in southern area was met. At present,75%of the sewage interception project in southern area of Xiaoshan has been applied based on the new design. The investment and operation cost is saved and collection efficiency of sewage is also enhanced by using the optimized design so that the environment of water body is improved, which contribute not only to the improvement of ecological environment and life quality, but also to the sustainable development of economy and society...
